Disney Princesses Bits and Pieces
For my independent project, I created three large paintings based off of the different Disney princesses’ movies. My first painting was of Princess Tiana from ‘The Princess and the Frog.’ In the artwork, she is wearing her iconic green dress and bathing in the sunlight on a balcony. Next, my second painting was of the pastries from ‘Brave.’ There are four full pastries and another one that you can only partially see in the painting presented on a wood log. Lastly, my third artwork was of multiple books stacked up on top of each other with a wilting rose on the top book to represent ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ All of these paintings I used a pencil for the sketch and acrylic paint for the rest.
A couple months ago, I went to Disneyland for the first time. It was a magical experience despite the pouring rain that day. This became my main inspiration to create art on my favorite Disney princesses’ movies, taking one subject or object from said movie and painting it.
However, like many other artists, I experienced many challenges during my independent project. One of my hardships was painting Tiana’s face and skin as Tiana was wearing makeup and her skin had various shades of brown. But I pushed myself through this challenge by simplifying and limiting the colors I had in my disposal to not overwhelm myself. Another issue was blending large areas of color together. The paint would partially dry in areas I still needed to blend and, as a result, the paint would clump together and leave white spots as I would try to mix the two colors. In order to counteract this issue, I would either use a lot of paint so it wouldn’t dry as quickly or do a small section before swiftly adding paint for the next area and continue blending. The second technique I used had to move on to the next section quickly so that it wouldn’t look disconnected.
At the end of the project, there are some aspects of my artworks that I am proud of. For example, I like how I interpreted the reference photos into my own art style and made it more ‘animated’ and simpler. Not only does it tie all of my paintings together with this art style, but it also makes the paintings feel more personal and like my creation despite using a reference. However, I do believe that I could’ve done better with some areas of blending. In some sections, it’s a bit choppy and not the best that I want it to be.
From this experience, I learned to not rush painting. Whenever I was impatient in my work, mistakes came easier and would sometimes ruin parts of my work which I then had to go back and fix.
